Celebrating emancipatory and democratic tradition of Serbia

National Day of the Republic of Serbia, February 15th commemorates the two great events for the Serbian people - the beginning of the First Serbian Uprising and Revolution 1804th led by Serbian leader Djordje Petrovic – (known as Karadjordje) and the adoption of the first Constitution of the 1835th known as “Sretenje Constitution” .

This day connects two traditions: combat and politically emancipatory. It is a good match, because they overlapped two beginnings - a warrior fighting for the freedom of the Serbs and the beginning of modern European democracy.

On February 15th 1804, in Orasac near Arandjelovac has been made decision to start the organized armed resistance to Ottoman rule. This is the beginning of the First Serbian Uprising led by Karadjordje Petrovic.

Thirty years later, on February 15th, 1835th, in Kragujevac, the Serbian National Assembly adopted the first constitution in the history of Serbia. It was not only the first constitutional act in our history, it was one of the most democratic and liberal constitution that time based on model of similar legislation of Belgium and France.
